Special Lecture by Robert I. Hellyer, a Professor from Wake Forest University in the US
We invited Robert I. Hellyer, a professor, to give a special lecture in Professor Hashino’s course (Comparative Economic History) during the first semester of this academic year.
It was a great honor to invite Professor Robert I. Hellyer of Wake Forest University in the US to give a lecture.
The title of his lecture was “Economic Development in Japan and the United States: Insights from Tea Trade between 1850 and 1940.” Based on his research focusing on the rise and decline of Japan's tea exports, changes in U.S. market demand, and the mutual influence between Japanese industry and American market, Professor Hellyer delivered an insightful presentation. Of course, we could read his book (Green with Milk & Sugar: When Japan Filled America's Tea Cups, Columbia Univ. Press, 2021), his lecture was so exciting because it was a true example of comparative economic history.
During the lecture, many students actively asked Professor Hellyer questions. We would be delighted to hear about his on-going research on the history of bread in Japan in the near future.
